Passed Down

A brand documentary series about the people who build the machines that move a billion people a day — and the craft they hand down to the next generation.

THE STORY

KONE moves over a billion people every day. It's the kind of number that impresses in a deck and disappears the moment you read it, because a billion of anything stops meaning much. So we went the other direction — all the way down to two people and the work in their hands. A manufacturing craftsman three decades into building escalators, doing the wiring and the safety checks himself, who now teaches his young son the same principles he spent a career learning. A technician whose grandfather and father built careers here before him, who changed careers to join them, and who now trains his own brother as an apprentice. What they have in common is the whole point: these machines are engineered, but the craft is inherited.

THE APPROACH

We took a documentary approach to a deeply technical brand — not to explain the engineering, but to find the people inside it. That meant time on the floor and in the field, long enough to see what a stranger misses: that these products are, in a real sense, handmade, and that the knowledge to make them safe gets passed hand to hand, often within families. We developed the creative and produced across use cases — employer branding, client-facing marketing, internal comms — handling strategy, production, and post throughout. Every piece was built to align with KONE's global brand and to hold up as a real story, not a spec sheet with music.

THE IMPACT

Most people ride an elevator a dozen times a week without a single thought about who built it. This is the kind of storytelling that changes that — you stand a little differently on the escalator once you've met the person who wired it, and the son he's teaching to do it next. It turns an invisible, industrial brand into something human and durable, because pride and craftsmanship don't photograph in a product shot. You have to meet the people.
